Biography
Most of Reza Mohseni Artworks are from a strong need for self-expression arise. This need for self-expression stands in close connection with his eventful life. The memories of war and repression by the regime of religious fanatics in his homeland, Iran. And his experiences as a refugee and displaced.
Impressions which he incorporated between 1995 and 1997 in black and white images. During that time he made with chalk and charcoal drawings in large format. Then he drew mostly dark, desolate landscapes. With some human skulls on a deserted stretch of earth. These drawings can be the strong hand of the artist clearly at work. He wanted these images with all aspects of human existence, destiny, drama, fear and loneliness in a single image capture. The emotional aspect of these pictures are for Reza in that time more important than their aesthetic value.
During his study and then he read lots of literature and philosophy. He is introduced to existentialism by Jean Paul Sartre represented. He becomes deeply impressed. A sense of meaninglessness of human existence and the alienation of man in the world according to a feeling among the artist.
Gradually lose this way of the imagination expressive power of Reza. She makes room for writing. He wrote many texts on large format paper and presents them as an autonomous work of art. He makes a room full of paper and write all kinds of texts. From that time his work is more subdued. Later, the words get more structure in which the mental condition of the maker can find. By the rate at which words are written. By the applied stress under some words. Crossed out words, uncorrected errors.
In 1998, he also acts on the human body to write. In the same time he photographed body parts. Hands and feet in a strange position.
One of his works is a picture of a hand written word ‘Home’. This very modest picture you can see all elements of his previous work. The word ‘Home’ is written on the landscape of the body. A strange, empty and impenetrable landscape. It means
the same word and image. Because they are written on the human body. That our first and last home.
